The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk follows a gang of unlikely heroes who you must help to navigate a dungeon filled with all manner of enemies, quests and surprises. If you like the genre and don’t mind the humor it may be worth persevering for and getting used to though, as there’s no doubt it’s a rare bird in the space… so it does have merit in that light. Le donjon de Naheulbeuk, as it is known in French, its original language, is a fictional audio adventure by John Lang, and was originally published in 2005. The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos is a turn-based tactical RPG chock-full of charm, humour and chaos Leading a ragtag company of unlikely heroes, players will embark on an epic adventure through the dreadful dungeon of Naheulbeuk, utilising both strength and smarts to overcome the very worst that the evil lord Zangdar has to throw at them. The battles are fun as well and I liked the tactical. The interface feels like it was more at home on a PC, and though everything has been mapped to work with a controller the scheme is more awkward than the norm. Its what kept me going as long as I did despite the issues (see below).
What serves as a bit of a crippling blow, even if you enjoy the game’s humorous sensibilities, is that at least in its launch state the experience has some quirks and bugs that could use work. But this doesn’t keep the game from being a success. There are some hiccups, however, especially concerning the controls. It is made for people who love pen & paper, and it does this job quite well. In the case of Dungeon, though, even as much as I love some fun and silly humor I’ll say it trends more towards being crass in a predictable (and a bit tired) way than I would have preferred. The Dungeons of Naheulbeuk is, before all else, just a lot of fun, both regarding the gameplay and its humour.
The player has not one or two heroes at his disposal, but a whole party of 7 unique characters that do not need. However, a feeling of déjà-vu quickly arises. This is an addicting adventure RPG, with turn-based combat, which is filled with humour and ridicule of genre cliche.
